Some courses are over two weekends, and you must attend both.  4-8 volunteers are needed to hold the events.

Big Boat First Mate
Mariners who have completed the prerequisites may register to improved their skills on the GSSJC Big Boat.  This course teaches Mariners to competently maneuver, crew, and skipper large sloops (keelboats).  Mariners taking this course will learn navigation skills and practice steering a keelboat both under power and under sail.  After completing this course, Mariners will be able to earn sailing service hours by volunteering as senior crew for GSSJC Troop Sailing on the Big Boat.

Completion of the Performance Sailing theory rating is required to pass Big Boat First Mate.  This additional material covers weather prediction, anchoring and navigation.

Persons born on or after 9/1/1984, and are under the age of 18, must have a Texas Boaters Education Certificate to legally operate a windblown vessel over 14 feet in length.

Overnight accommodation for participants is dependent upon the availability of adult volunteers.  4-8 adult form chaperones are required.  Please contact for more information.

Bring: Permission Slip and Medical Form.  You will receive an e-mail with a packing list.  Cost includes all meals.

Note:  All girls must attend the entire weekend 10/7-10/9.  Girls must be 11 or older to participate. Check in is at 6:45 pm on Friday and check out is at 5 pm on Sunday.
