(HOUSTON-April 5, 2002) The Houston Junior Chamber and the Junior Chamber Foundation have named Mary Vitek, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC), one of Five Outstanding Houstonians for 2002. Each nominee is selected on the basis of an independent record of adherence to the Jaycee Creed. Vitek joins many high-achieving Houstonians who have received this recognition, including Dr. Denton Cooley, CBS Anchorman Dan Rather, former Houston Oiler Warren Moon, and KTRK Talk Show Host Debra Duncan. The Five Outstanding Young Houstonians are eligible to be nominated for the Five Outstanding Young Texans Competition, and if they are selected at that level, they will join those competing for the Ten Outstanding Young Americans competition. "I feel very privileged to be recognized by such a prestigious organization, and one whose values and mission are so closely aligned with those of Girl Scouting," said Vitek. "I share this honor with our dedicated board members, and the many other volunteers who help ensure that the promise of Girl Scouting is available to every girl, everywhere." GSSJC
is the second largest council in the United States, serving 53,183 girls
and 14, 000 adults. The Council is currently recruiting girls for all
Girl Scouting levels and troop leaders. For more information, call 713-292-0300,
