Operation: We Care!

Girl Scout Troop #1577 went above and beyond the call of duty to let our military troops in Iraq know that they are loved and appreciated when they collected funds to donate 545 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies through the San Jacinto Council's Cookie Share Program.

The Cookie Share program allows Girl Scout supporters who prefer to not eat the cookies to donate them to a non-profit organization that the troop has selected. Girls learn what affect the donations have on the recipients. "I think that this is a very special thing to do because the soldiers are out in Iraq fighting for us, and sending cookies is the least thing we can do to say thank you," said 9 year-old Megan M.

The cookies will be shipped for free by a non-profit organization called Operation We Care. One of the troop's leaders, Caryn Bizarro, is very proud of the girls. "The girls worked so hard and were very dedicated to this project," said Bizarro. "I'm so glad that our troops in Iraq will know just how much we care about them."

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization for girls, with a membership of more than 3.5 million girls and adults. Today, as when founded in 1912, GSUSA helps cultivate values, social conscience, and self-esteem in young girls, while also teaching them critical life skills that will enable them to succeed as adults. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Chartered by GSUSA to provide Girl Scouting locally, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is one of the largest Girl Scout councils in the country serving over 63,000 girl members and 18,000 adults in 25 southeast Texas counties. For more information call 1-800-392-4340 or visit
