Girl Scouts Honor Bellaire Community Leaders
Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) recently honored the following community partners: Harris County Hospital District, Bellaire Fire Department, Bellaire Optimist Club, Bellaire United Methodist Church, Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School, Horn Elementary, Condit Elementary School, Christ Presbyterian Church and Gifts with Heart.
Harris County Hospital District was awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation for offering career exploration and service opportunities. They have hosted GSSJC’s Nursing Discovery Interest Project, which includes workshops that allow Girl Scouts to fulfill the career exploration requirement needed for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award.
Harris County Hospital District has long been a venue for troops searching for just the right service project. From toiletries for patients to blankets for babies and toddlers, troops can find a project that interests them and meets a community need.
The Bellaire Fire Department received a Laser Plaque for their support of local Girl Scouts. They give tours of their facility, teach first aid and explain emergency procedures to the girls. They also allow their firehouse to be used for extra storage during the Girl Scout Cookie Sale.
The Bellaire Optimist Club, also known as the “Horn Scout House,” donates college scholarships for Gold Award recipients as well as provides a meeting place for the Daisy Girl Scouts through Senior Girl Scouts. They were awarded with the Walnut Plaque.
The Bellaire United Methodist Church received the Laser Plaque in appreciation of their efforts. A long time host of rallies, troop meetings and award ceremonies, the church and its friendly, flexible staff are true supporters of Girl Scouts.
The Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School has been awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for providing their facilities, including their football field, for a variety of programs. Recently the church played host to “Camp Ever Rock,” an event for more than 100 Brownies and Juniors from the Ever Rock Service Unit.
Horn Elementary principal Sarah Harrington was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for her support to the Girl Scouts. She allows the EverRock Service Unit to hold rallies at the school and helps recruit volunteers to distribute informational flyers because of her belief in the importance of Girl Scouting.
Condit Elementary principal Fred Boyer was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation for welcoming Girl Scouts as well as promoting Girl Scout events. He also recently encouraged his students to help with a Girl Scout Gold Award project, where students learned about Veterans Day and made Thank You Cards for our country’s veterans.
Christ Presbyterian Church was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for providing Girl Scout troops a place to meet and to hold their rallies and bridging ceremonies free of charge. They have also invited troops to participate in service projects like food drives and unloading pumpkins for their annual Pumpkin Patch.
Gifts With Heart (GWH) was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for their program, which allows Girl Scouts to make gifts for children in need. Gifts With Heart was established in 2004 to promote community involvement, and help create solutions for building a strong, united world.
Thanks to Gifts With Heart, Girl Scouts are increasing their skills and confidence by handcrafting toys and games with GWH partner Lowe’s Home Improvement. GSSJC has even created a special program patch for Girl Scouts who participate.
Chartered by GSUSA to provide Girl Scouting locally, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is one of the largest Girl Scout councils in the country serving over 63,000 girl members and 18,000 adults in 25 southeast Texas counties. For more information call 1-800-392-4340 or visit www.gssjc.org.
GSSJC Pluralism Statement
Embracing and promoting pluralism is an integral part of every activity and plan of Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, not disconnected or separate projects. Only individuals willing to accept and be educated about the basic tenet that Girl Scouting is for all girls may serve in volunteer leadership or staff positions.
