Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council Opens Up Camps
HOUSTON (May 2009) – Summer is just around the corner, prompting many parents to search for ways to keep the kids entertained and engaged during the school break. With family budgets a little tighter this year in the current economic climate, vacation travel might be a challenge for some. That’s why more and more families are turning to local activities such as day camps to ensure their kids have fun and make lasting memories this summer.
From June to August, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) offers more than 20 different day and twilight camps throughout the greater Houston area. Whether it’s canoeing and crafts, or swimming and archery, there’s something for every girl ages 6 to 17 at day and twilight camp this summer. Girls do not have to be registered as a Girl Scout prior to registration. In fact, non-members are welcome and encouraged to register.
Day camp takes place Monday through Friday, with campers returning home each afternoon. Twilight camp takes place Monday through Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Camp activities include arts and crafts, stargazing, dancing, hiking and sports. Girls can also learn important skills including how to start a campfire, cook outdoors and tie knots.
GSSJC also offers girls and their families more traditional overnight camping experiences this summer at three of the Council’s properties:
- Located in Conroe, Texas, Camp Agnes Arnold is a 480-acre wooded camp that features a large lake for swimming, fishing and canoeing, and several nature trails for hiking and nature study.
- For ocean lovers, Camp Casa Mare on Galveston Bay offers a variety of water activities including sailing, swimming and water skiing.
- Also in Conroe, Camp Misty Meadows is one of the finest horseback riding facilities in the Southwest with barn complex, riding arenas, and a herd of 40 horses waiting to be loved, hugged, and groomed by summer campers.
