Girl Scouts receives over $500,000 in technology upgrades from Microsoft

Grant to help Council strengthen services provided to more than 90,000 members

HOUSTON (April 12, 2012) –In February, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) received $500,000 in Microsoft Software upgrades from Microsoft Corporation, giving the Council a significant systems upgrade from Microsoft 2003 to Microsoft 2010. GSSJC’s Fund Development Department, with the assistance of GSSJC’s IT Department, submitted a $100,000 software upgrade request to the technology giant in January in an effort to increase the Council’s technology capacity to effectively reach more girls interested in Girl Scouting. Much to the Council's surprise, the grant received was much more than the initial request.

"This Microsoft grant is very significant for us and will benefit us as we provide services to more than 90,000 girls and adults throughout our Council," said Mary Vitek, GSSJC's chief executive officer. "We'll be able to upgrade and standardize our current systems, have software that is compatible with our membership's systems and strengthen our Council communications to provide more girls with opportunities to reach their full potential."

Due to limited budgets, non-profit organizations like GSSJC are not able to upgrade their hardware or software or provide technology training for staff to the degree of for-profit organizations, widening the digital divide. Grants like the one Microsoft awarded, provides solutions for non-profits that address technology gaps.

GSSJC's network upgrade is the first phase of the new software implementation and is currently underway. Council staff is preparing to transition to the new software by taking software courses to familiarize themselves with the significant changes to take place.
