Girl Scout earns first place in Junior Olympic Archery Division

HOUSTON, Texas (April 18, 2013) – Mireille M. represented the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC), one of the largest Girl Scout councils in the U.S., at the 2013 Texas State Junior Olympic Archery Division (JOAD) Indoor National Championship and the 44th Southern Region JOAD Indoor National Championship. The Girl Scout Junior earned top honors at both, ranking her sixth in the nation in the Female Recurve Bowman division for girls 10 to 12 years old.

“She is very committed to her sport and every free time she has, after covering academics and Girl Scout activities, is spent either shooting or watching videos of Olympic archers,” said Rosa M., Mireille’s mother. “She was very happy to have the opportunity to meet two of her favorite Olympic archers, Miranda Leek and Jennifer Nichols.”

Ten-year-old Mireille competed indoor using a Recurve Precision Shooting Equipment (PSE) X-Appeal with PSE competition limbs, a sight and stabilizers. Indoor tournaments require competitors to shoot 60 arrows 18 meters away from a 60 cm target face. In preparation for tournaments, Mireille shoots 100 arrows a day at home in her backyard, at Girl Scout camp or at an indoor range.

Mireille will compete in her first outdoor tournament April 20 in Columbus, Texas, the first of a series of Texas Outdoor Target Tournaments (TOTS). Outdoor tournaments require competitors to shoot 72 arrows 20, 25 or 30 meters away from an 80 cm target face. Mireille has to attend three TOTS tournaments in the series to qualify for the State Outdoor Championship scheduled at the end of July.

Mireille is a JOAD member of GSSJC’s Archers in Motion (AIM) program, which follows USA Archery guidelines. Members of AIM meet once a month at a Girl Scout camp to shoot 36 arrows in an attempt to attain specific JOAD and GSSJC shooting levels.

JOAD is a program of USA Archery that teaches archery to young people, provides great opportunities for awarding achievement, and helps archers to enjoy the sport recreationally or progress to the excitement of competition.

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization for girls, with a membership of more than 3.2 million girls and adults. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Chartered by GSUSA to provide Girl Scouting locally, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is the second largest Girl Scout council in the country serving more than 70,000 girls and 19,000 adults in 26 southeast Texas counties.
