Pastry chefs “batter” it out to help Girl Scouts kick-off 100th anniversary of first-known sale of Girl Scout Cookies

Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC), one of the largest Girl Scout councils in the U.S., will kick-off the 2017 Cookie Sale with its annual dessert competition Just Desserts 2017. Half-a-dozen pastry chefs from across Houston will “batter” it out to create delicious desserts using Girl Scout Cookies. The event will take place Thursday, January 19, 2017 at The Junior League of Houston located at 1811 Briar Oaks Lane from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

This year’s event will help mark the 100th anniversary of the first-known sale of Girl Scout Cookies and join in the excitement of Houston hosting Super Bowl LI.  A century ago, girls started participating in what would evolve into the largest entrepreneurial training program for girls in the world: The Girl Scout Cookie Program®, through which girls learn the essential skills they need to become effective leaders, manage finances and gain self-sufficiency and confidence in handling money. To commemorate this banner year for the organization, the highly anticipated Girl Scout S’mores™ will be available for order at the start of the sale, joining classics like Thin Mints and Shortbreads. The cookie will also be available for tasting at the event.

Just Desserts will feature desserts by:

  • The Cupcake Cowgirls Cypress
  • Gigi's Cupcakes
  • Mainely Sandwiches
  • Michael's Cookie Jar
  • Ooh La La: The Dessert Boutique
  • Smallcakes Houston

Each team will be paired with a Girl Scout who will assist with the dessert presentation.

Each dessert is judged by representatives of the local media, also paired with a Girl Scout, who has the task of sampling every dessert and voting for their favorites.

Our 2017 media judges are:

  • Houstonia Magazine – Katharine Shilcutt
  • KHOU Ch. 11 – Tiffany Craig
  • KPRC Ch 2. – Amy Davis
  • KTRK Ch. 13 – Patricia Lopez
  • Univision – Lizzet Lopez

Guests of the event will enjoy indulging their sweet tooth amidst football-themed décor. Proceeds from the event’s ticket purchases will benefit Girl Scouting locally.
