Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, the largest Girl Scout Council in the United States, unloaded the 2008 Girl Scout Cookie varieties by the truckload at Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday, February 16.

For more than a month, San Jacinto Council Girl Scout future entrepreneurs have been taking orders for delicious Girl Scout Cookies. On Saturday, sixteen trucks, 2 forklifts, 60 deliverymen, and 250 volunteers distributed 71,395 cases of cookies to 742 troops, who will soon be delivering nearly 856,740 packages of cookies to customers. Additional mega deliveries have been held in other parts of San Jacinto Council in February.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is a focal point of the Girl Scout Business and Economic Literacy initiative for girls age six through 17, providing finance, marketing, and public speaking skills, which in turn builds girls’ self-confidence and leadership skills. The leadership development skills girls learn truly last a lifetime.

The eight varieties of cookies offered this year are: Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Shortbread, Thanks-A-Lot, Caramel DeLites, Lemonades and the newest variety: 100 calorie cookies in pouches called Cinna-Spins. The price for a package of cookies is $3.50. All varieties of Girl Scout cookies are now “zero grams of trans fat per serving.”

There’s still time to fill your cookie craving! Beginning February 22, girls will be offering the cookies at cookie booths outside of grocery stores and other retail venues. The sale ends March 30. The public can call 1-888-GS-COOKIE or visit www.gssjc.org to enter their zip code and be directed to the nearest Girl Scout Cookie Booth.
