Local Teen Wins Girl Scout Global Citizens Essay Contest
Winner receives all-expense paid trip to Washington DC to experience more of the world
HOUSTON (May 27, 2008) – Girl Scouts of the San Jacinto Council’s (GSSJC) own Poonam V., age 12, was one of 18 national contestants to win the Girl Scout Global Citizens Essay Contest for her essay titled “My Eyes Are Now Open.” The award, given by Girl Scouts of the USA, recognizes girls for their ability to convey through writing the importance of being a global citizen. In recognition of her accomplishment, Vaidya won a trip to Washington, DC, which will take place this summer.
“We are so proud of Poonam for using her creativity to explain how important the Girl Scout experience is in making girls more culturally aware,” said GSSJC CEO Mary Vitek.
The contest was announced in January and open to all Girl Scout councils. Girls, ages 15-17, were asked to reflect on a Girl Scout experience and describe how that experience inspired them to live as a global citizen, defined as a person who understands and appreciates cultural differences, and strives to instill this value in others. For the winners, the educational tour will not simply be a reward for a job well done. It will be a vehicle for developing ambassadors of global thinking and will provide them with an opportunity to have an impact on their troop members and community at large.
“I was interested in entering this contest because when I went to Washington DC last time, I had a lot of fun. I also thought that the essay prompt was really interesting, and I did not have a difficult time thinking about what to write about because Girl Scouts has provided me with so many opportunities to learn about other cultures,” said Poonam. “During the trip, I am hoping to get to meet other Girl Scouts and hear about the experiences that helped them be a better Global Citizen. I also want to visit some of the National Monuments and learn more about America’s history.”
