Girl Scout Supporters Celebrate Volunteers at Urban Campout 2009

HOUSTON (April 27, 2009) – On Friday, April 24, part of the George R. Brown Convention Center was transformed into an outdoor campsite, complete with live trees, lush backdrops, canoes, tents and more for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council’s Urban Campout 2009. The theme for this year’s event was “Celebrate Volunteerism around the Campfire.”

Approximately 300 guests enjoyed the camp-like experience at the annual fundraiser, which supports Girl Scout community outreach program. Donning their finest camp chic attire, adults danced the night away to music by Fried Ice Cream and enjoyed a virtual shooting gallery, a 3-D theatre and other special treats, like photo flip book mementos. There was also a live and silent auction.

The highlight of the evening, however, was a tribute to long-time Girl Scout friends, supporters and volunteers Bud and Nancy Simpson, who accepted the honor on behalf of San Jacinto Council’s more than 17,000 volunteers.

“In Girl Scouts, activities are girl-led. Girls learn by doing, and the learning is cooperative, not competitive. To discover who she can be, a girl needs access to wise, caring adults who both inspire her and respect her. At San Jacinto Council, we are fortunate to have more than 17,000 adult volunteers who do just that,” said Mary Vitek, GSSJC CEO. Jackie Martin and Betsy Kamin were this year’s event co-chairs.
