New "Shout Outs!' Girl Scout Cookies are Sensibly Sweet

Light and crisp, these Belgian-style caramelized cookies are a tasty treat

HOUSTON, Texas (January 3, 2011) "Shout Outs!", this year's new Girl Scout Cookie, is sure to have everyone talking. The Belgian-style caramelized cookie has zero grams of trans fat per serving, no hydrogenated oils, no artificial colors or preservatives, and no high fructose corn syrup. Its ingredients are similar to what you might find in your own kitchen: flour, sugar, vegetable oil, brown sugar, vanilla and spices.

"Just like mom would make,” says Selena Sanderson, Senior Vice President at Interbake Foods, whose ABC Bakers division bakes Girl Scout Cookies. "We understand that consumers are making a concerted effort to eat more simply, and Shout Outs! reflect that, " she explained, saying that the average serving size is four cookies totaling 130 calories. The cookies can be eaten alone or used as an ingredient in desserts such as Caramelized Pear and Nutty-Crunch Sundaes and Shout Outs! Cheesecake and Fruit Trifle recipes available on the baker’s Web site at www.abcsmartcookies.com.

"Shout Outs!" join perennial Girl Scout Cookie favorites such as Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties and can be purchased by ordering from a Girl Scout as well as at booth sales held at local businesses throughout cookie season. For safety reasons, Girl Scout Cookies can not be ordered online, but consumers can visit www.GirlScoutCookies.org to enter their zip code and locate their local Girl Scout Council who'll provide information about the upcoming cookie sale.

Support of Girl Scout Cookie sales is vital to every Girl Scout and their community. Funds raised are used in a variety of ways locally, including sponsorship of special events and projects, improvements and maintenance of camps and other Girl Scout facilities, and in some cases, providing financial assistance to make Girl Scouting available for all girls. The cookie sale is an important leadership activity for girls that help them develop life-long skills such as goal setting, decision making, business ethics, working with people and money management.

Shout Outs! are not the only innovation to the Girl Scouts Cookie sale this year. In a pilot program from ABC Bakers, Thanks-A-Lot, a shortbread cookie layered with fudge and embossed with "Thank You" in five different languages, will be packaged without the traditional Girl Scout Cookie paperboard carton. This initiative will reduce the use of paperboard by 150 tons, enough to fill 14 garbage trucks.

Such innovation is a reflection of Girl Scouting and its ongoing mission by its members to think ahead. Not bad for an organization that will mark its century anniversary in March of 2012.

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization for girls, with a membership of more than 3.7 million girls and adults. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Chartered by GSUSA to provide Girl Scouting locally, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is one of the largest Girl Scout councils in the country serving more than 76,000 girl members and nearly 18,000 adults in 26 southeast Texas counties.
