Beaumont Girl Scouts show local community they have “sole”
Girls collect over 750 shoes for those in need as part of camp service project
BEAUMONT, Texas (June 21, 2011) – We usually associate camp with s’mores, camp fires and sing-a-longs, but at Girl Scout Twilight Camp located at West End Baptist Church, 150 local area Girl Scouts and 50 Girl Scout volunteers showed they had “sole” as they collected more than 750 pairs of shoes to be donated to Soles4Shoes, a nonprofit organization that distributes shoes to those in need.
“I heard about Souls4Shoes from another Girl Scout leader at a Twilight Camp meeting,” said Robin Humphrey, Twilight Camp director and service unit manager. “With all the natural disasters going on, we decided this would be a great organization to contribute to.”
Girl Scout Twilight camp is a week long camp session where girls spend every evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in their age appropriate units participating in a variety of activities. This year’s theme, Girl Scout Ways, allowed girls to learn traditional Girl Scout camp activities, including Girl Scout songs and games such as tinikling and lemmi sticks, how to play with parachutes and an earth ball and make those infamous s’mores. The girls also had a visit from Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Ms. Low answered questions and told stories about how the Girl Scout movement was started.
The location of Twilight camp can change from year to year, but this year Pastor Big Jim Salles and his wife, senior leadership of West End Church of Beaumont, offered the use of their facility free of charge, providing a beautiful location to hold the camp.
“The girls had tons of fun doing water games and activities, which came in handy to help beat the heat,” said Robin. “For a nominal fee the girls enjoyed five days of a great Girl Scout program in a safe environment, received a t-shirt and Girl Scout patch, and most importantly, made a difference in the lives of those who will receive these shoes.”
Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization for girls, with a membership of more than 3.7 million girls and adults.
