What is Girl Scouting?

Girl Scouting is a membership organization open to all girls between the ages of 5 and 17 and to women and men 18 years of age and older who accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law and pay annual membership dues of $10.

The Girl Scout program is an informal educational program adapted to meet the developmental, emotional, and social needs and interests of girls in the program age levels.

The Girl Scout program has four goals:

  • to enable each girl to develop to her full potential
  • to relate to others with increasing understanding, skill and respect
  • to develop values to guide her actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making
  • to contribute to the improvement of society through the use of her abilities and leadership skills, working in cooperation with others

Who Are We?

Girl at Computer learningWhy Girl Scouting is for Girls?

Juliette Low began the organization to allow young girls to experience the challenges, the adventures and the special educational opportunities that were not provided in her day. Historically, Girl Scouting is defined as an organization for girls. Needs of girls are unique and can best be served by a girls' organization.

  • Girls are the only reason for Girl Scouting. Everything in Girl Scouting is designed for their particular needs and interests
  • Girl Scouting provides opportunities to develop a sense of values and self-worth in homogeneous settings.
  • Girl Scouting provides a girl with opportunities to know and like herself.
  • Girl Scouting is multicultural. We welcome and actively recruit every girl everywhere.
  • Girl Scouting provides values education to girls, encouraging involvement in community service.
  • Girl Scouting provides girls with opportunities to interact with women in leadership positions.

And best of all

  • Girl Scouting is FUN. Girls make new friends and feel part of a group.

Through Girl Scouting, a girl can reach her full potential, can develop sound values, and can experience the challenge of being a leader in a caring environment.

What Does Girl Scouting Cost?

It cost $10 per year to join Girl Scouts, whether you are and adult or a girl. This fee is sent directly to our national organization – Girl Scouts of the USA. It covers every members’ secondary Girl Scout activity insurance and pays for the quarterly Girl Scout Leader magazine for adults in Girl Scouting. In addition, girls will pay troop dues. These are set by the individual troop with input from the girls and their families. These dues, along with proceeds from the Council product sales pay for supplies used in the troop as well as camping expenses, special admission charges, etc. Financial assistance is available for those in need of part or all of the costs mentioned.

Will My Daughter Need a Uniform?

Uniforms are not required for participation in Girl Scouting. However, girls do like to wear them. They can be purchased at one of our Girl Scout shops or from our Online Shop.
