No girl, or any young person, should grow up in a world defined by racial inequities and trauma. No Black person should live in fear because of the color of their skin.
For more than 100 years Girl Scouts has stood for making the world a better place and pledged to “help people at all times.” Those words carry great weight and responsibility and compel us to denounce institutional racism, violence, injustice and inequity. Racism goes against the values of Girl Scouts and although we have acted to counter racism throughout our history, we know we have enormous work ahead of us to ensure we are an organization that engages in challenging discussion, acts with integrity and learns from missteps.
While we are proud of our history of diversity and inclusion, our work to end racism is far from finished. We have an obligation to take actions to overcome injustice. Our commitment is that Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council will do this work.
One of our core values at Girl Scouts is to be inclusive. We offer membership to all girls and adult volunteers without regard to practice or opinion on social issues. Accordingly, our membership consists of a cross-section of America with differing views on sensitive issues. However, as it pertains to the sensitive matter of sexual education, reproductive rights and related topics, we strongly believe that these topics are best decided and discussed between girls and their families. If a troop wishes to address these topics in a Girl Scouting environment, there is a strict policy in place for doing so. The policy specifies that participation is optional and that a parent or guardian provide written consent for participation. When or if consent is obtained, topics are presented from a factual, informative point of view and expressly exclude advocacy or promotion of any social or political agenda. Lack of adherence to these guidelines is considered a breach of our program intent.
