Get your first taste of backpacking by
joining a short hike facilitated by Backpacking SIG members!
Troops and Individual Girl Scouts are welcome to sign up to
hear firsthand from Backpacking Girl Members about how fun it
is to hike and camp in our state parks and state forests. All
age levels are welcome!
We will
review the map, learn trail etiquette, discuss our gear, and
go hiking! This activity may complete one or more steps in
your level's hiking-related badge like Brownie Hiker or Junior
Trail Adventure!
You do not need to
be a member of the Backpacking SIG to participate in our Day
Hikes. Girls at the Cadette level or older are eligible to
join our SIG and can participate in an orientation to learn
even more. Because this is an all-level event, expect that
the level of difficulty will depend on the youngest
attendees. Older girls might prefer attending Orientation
instead, if they are looking for a challenge.
Please wear appropriate walking shoes and clothes for
the weather and bring a full water bottle.
Before the event, please prepare a snack to eat after
the hike. There are many recipes for GORP (Good Old Raisins
and Peanuts) online and may even meet a badge
requirement!
This is not a
drop-off event; troops should bring ratio adults who will also
be going on the hike. Program will begin promptly at the
meeting site so please try to arrive with time to find the
group.
Registration for this event is
with GSSJC; additional fees to access the state park or for
parking are not covered in this registration. Please plan
accordingly.
Stephen
F. Austin State Park listed fees at $5/daily for 13+ as
of 5/2025, but this may change. The group will meet in the
main parking lot near the Nature Center.
Note: Please wear appropriate walking shoes and clothes
for the weather and bring a full water bottle.
