Mariners who have completed the prerequisites and service hours may register to learn how to crew one of our small camp sloops. We have two 420's. This course will teach the basics of rigging and derigging the sloops, how to properly use a jib sail, the use of various lines on the boat, proper maintenance and care of the sloops and the crew responsibilities.

Are you a currently enrolled Mariner ready to advance your sail rating? This class goes into more depth about Sunfish sailing techniques and includes the basics of racing and how to rig for performance.

Sloop Crew Prerequisites
  • Sail Aide is required before Sloop Crew
  • Before taking Sloop Crew, you are expected to have been actively involved in Mariners for at least three months after completion of Sail Aide. Active means that you sailed regularly during that three-month period.
  • Mariners who have completed Mate are expected to lead and serve. In order to qualify for Sloop Crew, you must have provided:
    • 3 hours of service to Mariners
    • Assisted at one Intro Weekend OR served as a Sail Aide for one Basic Sailing class.

In addition, Mariner Girls must obtain approval from the Instructor Coordinator (instructor.coordinator@gmail.com) to enroll in the Sloop Crew class. Mariner girls are responsible for reaching out to the Instructor Coordinator to verify their status. After receiving verified approval, you are on your way to learning how to crew a Sloop!
