Mariners who have completed the prerequisites and service hours may take this course to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to skipper one of our small camp sloops. We have two 420's. As the skipper of a medium-sized boat, these Mariners will improve their sailing skills while learning how to manage and direct a crew.

Completion of the Performance Sailing theory rating is required to pass Sloop Skipper. This additional material covers weather prediction, anchoring, and navigation.

Persons born on or after 9/1/1984, and under the age of 18 must have a Texas Boaters Education Certificate to legally operate a wind-blown vessel over 14 feet in length.

Sloop Skipper Prerequisites
  • Sloop Crew is required before Sloop Skipper.
  • Before taking Sloop Skipper, you are expected to have been actively involved in Mariners for at least three months after Sloop Crew. Regular sailing during the three months is required.
  • Mariners who have completed Mate are expected to lead and serve. In order to qualify for Sloop Skipper, you must have provided:
    • 3 hours of service to Mariners
    • Assisted at one Intro Weekend OR served as a Sail Aide for one Basic Sailing class.

In addition, Mariner Girls must obtain approval from the Instructor Coordinator (instructor.coordinator@gmail.com) to enroll in the Sloop Skipper class. Mariner girls are responsible for reaching out to the Instructor Coordinator to verify their status. After receiving verified approval, you are on your way to learn how to skipper a Sloop!
