Sunfish Mate is the next step in the GSSJC Mariner
program. Sunfish Mate is a two-weekend course. Mariners who pass
Sunfish Mate have proven that they are competent Sunfish sailors
and are eligible to take advanced ratings on the camp sloops and
the GSSJC Council Big Boats. This is a Two-Weekend Course: You
MUST attend for BOTH weekends April 24-26th AND May 8-10th NO
EXCEPTIONS.
In addition, Mariner Girls must obtain approval from the
Instructor Coordinator
(instructor.coordinator@gmail.com) to enroll in the
Sunfish Mate class. Mariner girls are responsible for reaching out
to the Instructor Coordinator to verify their status. After
receiving verified approval, you are on your way to becoming a
Sunfish Mate!
We expect girls
registering for Sunfish Mate to be competent Sunfish sailors. All
sailing skills tested in the Sunfish Mate course are skills that
were taught in Mariner Basic Sailing. Our standard for passing
Sunfish Mate is that each skill be performed six (6) times. Each
Mariner must sail single-handed (solo) while performing all
on-the-water skills, "as the skill would be performed by a
competent sailor."
In addition to
testing their sailing skills, Mariners attending Sunfish Mate
learn additional sailing theory and small boat maintenance.
Completion of the Sailing Fundamentals theory rating is required
to pass Sunfish Mate. This additional material reinforces the
sailing theory learned in Mariner Basic Sailing while building a
foundation of knowledge for sailors wanting to expand their
sailing abilities.
Sunfish Mate is challenging- some
girls may need to take this course multiple times to successfully
achieve the Sunfish Mate certification. There are no discounts or
refunds for bad weather or for students who cannot complete the
course.
