For nearly a century, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) has been a champion of Texas youth, investing more than $660 million in scholarships and educational programs throughout the state. Since 2015, the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) has been proud to partner with HLSR and has received more than $345,000 in support that helps bring life-changing experiences to girls across greater Houston.
In 2025, HLSR awarded $30,000 to our Girl Scout Outreach Program, which brings the Girl Scout experience directly to girls in K–12 Title I schools. Created in 1987 and expanded in 1992, the program ensures girls facing barriers — such as limited transportation, financial challenges, or fewer volunteers — can still access Girl Scout opportunities.
Today, the outreach program serves more than 16,000 girls each year, opening doors to STEM exploration, outdoor experiences, and more, regardless of a family’s ability to take part in a traditional troop.
Our shared connection with HLSR is reflected in leadership as well. GSSJC Board Chair-Elect Melinda “Mel” Underhill serves as the Chief Volunteer and Human Resources Officer at HLSR, reinforcing the deep and meaningful ties between our organizations.
This year, the Rodeo spirit came to life during GSSJC’s Go Texan Day celebration at our monthly staff meeting. More than 140 staff members joined the fun, competing in a western wear contest featuring exciting prizes from HLSR, including a grand prize of rodeo grounds-only season tickets. And as always, Girl Scouts proudly represented the council in the beloved annual rodeo parade, a tradition that showcases Houston’s heritage and is the heart of our community.
For the past 16 years, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been a generous champion of Girl Scouts. Their unwavering support continues to expand our reach, strengthen our programs, and empower thousands of girls to dream big and blaze new trails.
We are deeply grateful to HLSR for helping our girls shine brighter each year.
